September 11th, 2020 - The Fredericton Cardigan has been updated with an extended size range! Version 3 has sizes from 1-9, to accommodate a broader range of chest sizes. Sleeve caps have also been recalculated for a better fit! Wahoo!

Fredericton is a unisex cardigan knit with two strands of rustic Canadian wool held together to create a marled effect. It is worked in Reverse Stockinette stitch to add even more texture to an otherwise very simple garment. The shawl collar, set-in pockets, rolled up cuffs, and optional crochet collar edging are understated details that make this a classic and timeless wardrobe staple.

A Note about Yarn

As an alternative to holding two strands of a sport weight yarn together for a marled effect, a single strand of an aran weight wool can be used to achieve a solid colour fabric. Briggs & Little Heritage would be a great option, as it is essentially just two strands of the sport weight spun together! Please be sure to swatch!

NOTES

The back and front pieces of this cardigan are worked flat as one piece to the underarms, then each front and back are worked separately. A long circular needle is used to accommodate the large amount of stitches. Sleeves are worked in the round with the sleeve cap worked flat. Sleeve caps are sewn into armholes. The body is worked primarily in Rev St st, while the sleeves are worked in St st and are then turned “inside out”. Please pay attention to what is a WS row and what is a RS row while you are knitting! The sleeve is knit 5 cm/ 2” longer than average for a folded back cuff. Keep this in mind if adjusting sleeve length. Different body and sleeve lengths are given for women’s and men’s sizes. If only one set of numbers is given, it pertains to both women’s and men’s sizes. Read over pattern before you begin, highlighting all numbers that apply to the size you will be making.
